The Ministry Of Education forms committee to Review the controversial University Funding Model

The Government of Kenya finally hears the university student cries. After the rise of concerns among students, parents and the education concerns, a committee has now been established to review the new University funding model.

According to the Ministry Of Education Cabinet Secretary Professor Julius Migos, the initiative aims to ensure the funding model accommodates all students from various backgrounds and also addresses issues that have been raised.

CS Migos statement comes while in Tharaka Nithi during the inauguration of the newly appointed Chancellor Prof. Emeritus Ratemo Michieka. Cs Julius Migos statement places an emphasis indicating that the government’s aim is to better the education sector hence calling for collaboration and support fro all stakeholders.

This announcement fro Cs Migos follows the student riots across the nation that has affected learning in the higher education sector. Earlier, Cs Migos had requested the student leadership to call off the DEMOS and offer them room for intensive discussion and Contribute effectively to the issues on relation to their higher education.

President William Ruto has been in support for the funding model where he says all eligible students will get between Ksh. 40,000 and Ksh. 60,000 based on their financial needs.

The most needy student according to the new funding model will be placed in band 1 to access 70% scholarship, 25% loan, 5% household contribution and Ksh. 60,000 for Upkeep.

The University Students have now threatened to go on strike stating that the New Funding Model is disadvantageous to many.
